I know many musicians and vocalist that sent out countless demo tapes and hoping to be signed to a major record label. Two words guided them through years of being without releasing a recording or being signed. Record deal. In the meantime, I released my own CDs and some of the artist looked down their noses at my self produced effort. Apparently they thought my approach was conceited and second-rate, comparable to a lame self-centered book printing.

Now, perhaps releasing your own CD is conceited. But theirs nothing inherently second rate about it. Far from being akin to self-centered book printing, the act of releasing your own music is in keeping with the logical ideas of great people and nations: self-sufficiency, independence, entrepreneurism in short, what the great inventor Ralph Waldo Emerson called self reliance.

For todayfs musician, self-reliance means taking the gamble and frustration out of label hunting if a record deal is your goal, Why not make the deal with yourself? By releasing your own album, you can cease waiting for some one else to promote your name and you can take an active role in shaping your musica l future.

Having an album out not only expands your audience through audio play and record review; it also provides a way to make money via live performance, mail order, and retail outlets sales. Moreover, it gives you bargaining power with club owners, some of who wonft consider booking you unless you have a CD released. Best of all, if you sell thousands of self-produced units, you can watch with glee as the major labels beat a path to your door.

The price for your recording could range from between FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS U$ ($15.000.00 U$ dollars), to TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS U$ ($25.000.00 U$ dollars). It will depend mainly on your choice of musicians and if you choose to invite a guest artist. Who the artist is and what his or her ranking is in the business.
